The City of Poughkeepsie continues to shine — recently earning its place on World’s Best Cities’ prestigious list of America’s Greatest Cities of 2025. Celebrated for its breathtaking Hudson River location, world-class educational institutions, and rich architectural heritage, the City of Poughkeepsie is quickly becoming a national example of revitalization done right.
A City on the Rise
Ranked based on livability, lovability, and prosperity, the City of Poughkeepsie didn’t just remain on the list — it climbed higher in the rankings this year. This recognition reflects the momentum sparked by the City’s leadership, which has launched key initiatives in public safety, infrastructure, and economic development. At the heart of this forward progress are bold, community-focused projects like the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) and the Business Improvement District (BID) — both of which are transforming the city’s core into a more vibrant, safe, and welcoming destination for residents and visitors alike.
“It is no secret that the City of Poughkeepsie faces a pivotal turning point in its lifespan,” said Mayor Yvonne Flowers. “We are working tirelessly on initiatives that improve the visual, functional, and safety aspects of the city. That’s why it was especially encouraging to be recognized once again as one of America’s Greatest Cities. Our city has always been full of life and potential, and with our collective efforts underway, we will lead it to greater heights.”
A Destination Full of Life
The City of Poughkeepsie’s beauty and amenities make it easy to love. The city boasts 20 public parks, including the iconic Walkway Over the Hudson, the world’s longest elevated pedestrian bridge and a magnet for walkers, cyclists, and sightseers alike. Education is another standout, with the city located just minutes from prestigious institutions like Vassar College and Marist Colleges. Culturally, the City of Poughkeepsie remains a vibrant mosaic of heritage and community celebration — from Jazz in the Valley to La Guelaguetza, a beloved Oaxacan cultural festival in almost its 20th year. Historic districts like Academy Street, Garfield Place, and Dwight Street-Hooker Avenue preserve the architectural character and stories that have shaped the city through generations.
“I invite you to experience firsthand Poughkeepsie’s unique blend of historic charm, rich culture, top-tier education, and stunning natural beauty,” said Melaine Rottkamp, President & CEO of Destination Dutchess.
